Case Study 9:

“A new device is helping osteoporosis sufferers to cope”

A WOMAN who was once virtually housebound because of a back injury has found pain relief after years of searching, thanks to a remarkable new device.

Elizabeth Maidment has suffered for 17 years with brittle bones caused by the condition osteoporosis, which has at times limited her ability to perform even simple, everyday tasks.

She once broke both wrists in a fall, and was left in prolonged agony last Christmas Eve after dislodging some vertebrae whilst bending over at home in Dorset.

Mrs Maidment says the pain was so bad that at times she could not leave the house to go to church, the shops or even sit on a sofa.

Despite trying a range of painkillers and increased calcium in her diet to strengthen her bones, Mrs Maidment was almost resigned to living her life in constant pain.

Then she discovered a new therapy called Electronic Nerve Modulation (ENM).

Now, the 74-year-old has visited nearby Salisbury in a car, gone out with friends and is planning to go to church – which she has not done for months.

Mrs Maidment’s husband is now even using the device to treat a sore knee. And at least two of her friends are planning to obtain them, she says.

She added: “I have suffered with brittle bones for many years, but the pain I suffered last Christmas was the worst I had ever experienced.

“I just felt something pop, and something dislodge in my back. I could feel the pain right the way down my right leg when I moved sometimes.

“Sometimes when the pain was bad and I needed to leave the house, I couldn’t because I couldn’t walk up the street.

“So I would just pace up and down in the house. Now, this device has changed my life – it’s Heaven.”

A combination of painkilling treatment and using ENM once or twice a day, when needed, has enabled Mrs Maidment to cope with her pain, and regain her life.

Mrs Maidment added: “Sometimes it’s tempting to keep going and stay active because you can no longer feel the pain. But I have to keep telling myself that I still have the condition.

“I have notes in the house telling me that this is a help, not a cure. But what a help it has been.”

The above case study formed the basis of an article printed in the Bournemouth Echo on 22nd January 2005.
