What is the difference between DEEP tens (ENM) and TENS?

Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation (TENS) was invented by a British doctor, Dr Pat Wall, who had previously described the “Gate Control” theory of pain.  His idea was simple – to interfere with the passage of pain signals to the brain through the Central Nervous System.  TENS achieves this by stimulating the nerves just under the skin to operate the Gate.

With DEEP tens an electrical impulse passes deeper into the tissues than traditional TENS to reach nearer to the Central Nervous System.  This enables the “dose” of electricity to operate more directly without causing any tingling sensation.  The advantages of this approach are clear.  The therapy is applied more directly to the pain Gate and due to the absence of a tingle, the electrical impulse is able to operate more effectively.

Does ENM Treatment Hurt?

ENM is sensation free at therapeutic levels. At more intense treatment levels users may feel a slight tingling sensation under the electrode pads. This is quite normal and will not interfere with treatment. If this is felt to be at all unpleasant, the user can simply reduce the intensity of the treatment but will still be able to receive tingle free therapy. Most people start to feel more relaxed within a few minutes of starting treatment and are then aware of a reduction of their pain.

Is ENM Safe?

ENM is very safe and no significant side-effects have been reported following either short or long-term use. ENM complies with all the requirements of the Medical Devices Directive.

How Effective is DEEP tens (ENM) therapy?

A double blind, placebo controlled cross-over clinical trial on the effectiveness of ENM technology was published in March 2004 and showed that 86.6% of patients derived benefit from this therapy after only one week’s use.

In March 2005 an analysis of a qualitative self-assessment by users was published.  This was based on 428 questionnaires returned by ENM users and showed that ENM technology is acceptable and effective when used by patients in their own homes with 86.4% deriving benefit from the device.

An independent clinical study presented in September 2005 concluded that ENM provides better relief than traditional TENS for chronic low back pain.  77% of patients found ENM easier to use than TENS and patients reported the duration of their pain relief to be 1-3 days with ENM versus only 2-12 hours with TENS.

How long does ENM's Pain Relieving Effects Last?

This varies from individual to individual. One treatment of 20 to 30 minutes usually gives several hours of relief. The effect of the device is also accumulative. In other words, its analgesic properties have been shown to increase with repetitive use.

A recently published study of ENM and TENS has shown that ENM users typically enjoy 1-3 days pain relief as opposed to 2-12 hours with TENS.

Can ENM replace pain relief medication?

In some cases, yes.

Which pains can be treated by ENM?

In general terms, ENM may treat any chronic (long-term) pain, where active inflammation is not present. In other words, ENM will not mask acute pain sensations from toothache, abscesses, appendicitis, meningitis, heart pain or any other pain that ought to be reported to a doctor.

ENM is designed to treat chronic pain such as recurring neck and back pain, limb pain such as Repetitive Strain Injuries (RSI), wear and tear arthritis and burnt out rheumatoid arthritis, migraine, pancreatitis, fibromyalgia, osteoporosis, post mastectomy pain, post shingles pain, cancer pain, neuralgia, phantom limb pain and pain associated with stroke and angina.
